Elliptical
Trainer Comparison
What
are the various criteria you should use when doing a comparison of elliptical
trainers? There are numerous models with a plethora of features. Prices range
from a few hundred to a few thousand. The quality can be as drastic as between
a Yugo and a Lexus. So how do you determine which elliptical trainer is best for
your needs?
A
logical comparison of elliptical trainers requires determining your budget and
your fitness goals. Of course, what you need to pay for a reasonable elliptical
trainers has to be based on buying a machine that will fulfill you fitness goals.
That means a machine that can withstand your level of your exercise. Will you
use the machine a few hours a week, or will multiple people use the elliptical
10-15 hours per week? Also weight and height of the user are factors that you
need to consider.
Below
is a list of comparison considerations:
Features
- What are the features you require to attain your goals? For example, do you
want heart rate control? How many programs are necessary to provide variety and
motivation? Do you care if you have an LCD or LED console? Do you find articulating
footpedals (pedals that move with the elliptical motion) more comfortable. One
important suggestion is not to buy on features alone, but primarily on the quality
of the machine.
Stride
- Buy an elliptical that has a stride that is sufficient to handle your height.
Some machines have small 16" strides, and they claim that can handle users
over 6'. That is nonsense. Purchase a minimum 18" stride elliptical, and
if you are tall consider a machine with a 20" stride. Go to one of your local
fitness stores to compare the different strides.
Warranty
- I firmly believe that a warranty is one of the most accurate indications
of quality, and is probably the single most important factor in a comparison of
an elliptical trainer. For example, many cheap elliptical trainers have warranties
that are 90 days for parts and labor. Why is that? Because they are not built
to last much longer. It is vitally important to purchase an elliptical trainer
that has adequate coverage. Minimum 2 years parts and 1 year labor.
Company
Reputation - Does the company have a reputation for building quality machines
with quality components? And does the company stand behind their products with
good customer service? An important factor if you need service.
Reviews
and Customer Testimonials - Unfortunately there are not many resources that
provide insightful reviews of elliptical trainers. This site is one of the best.
Also ConsumerReports.org has some excellent reviews. You may want to check epinions.com
and amazon.com for customer testimonials.
Price
Range Comparison of Elliptical Trainers
The
comparison of elliptical trainers is relative to the price. I categorize ellipticals
into three categories:
Budget
- Under $1,000
Mid-Priced - $1,000 - $2,000
Quality - $2,000 - $3,000
Any
machines under $600 will be of questionable quality. Starting at $1,000 you start
to get into machines that should hold up under moderate use. The Schwinn
418 is a popular model at this price range. For regular usage I recommend
you spend at least $1,500 and consider Smooth
and Sole. If you have
the money and want the best, consider Life
Fitness and Precor.
They are commercial quality for the home.
Do
your homework and research and you will be an educated consumer in your elliptical
trainer comparison.
