Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510 Review

2012 Elliptical Trainer Reviews     |     "Best Buy" Elliptical Trainers

Gold's Gym 510 Elliptical Trainer ReviewThe Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510 is a budget elliptical trainer that is made by Icon Fitness. Icon has good intentions by offering this low-end elliptical machine. After all, not everyone can afford expensive fitness equipment. Nevertheless, the Crosstrainer 510 doesn’t begin to compare with some of Icon’s finer models.

You can find the Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510 at Walmart.com. Now, as we all know, Walmart does not specialize in fitness equipment. Walmart’s goal is selling an affordable product. The features and the price of this particular product may look good, but what about the quality? At this price you need to realize it is built with budget components.

There is conflicting information regarding the warranty. In the specs they list it as 90 days, which is not much coverage, and not a vote of confidence on the durability. However, in the description they mention it comes with a one parts and labor warranty. Regardless, I would opt for additional coverage. This is not a heavy duty machine.

Let’s take a look at what you’re getting on the Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510.

  • 174 pounds of cross-trainer – Actually this is the shipping weight. Subtract 10-15 pounds for the actual machine weight. This is a moderate weight for an elliptical trainer. However, having been on the 510 it was not all that stable. OK for moderate weight individuals.
  • Single Wheel Rollers - The pedals run on single wheel roller. The problem with this design is that overtime you may get left to right swaying. I prefer dual rollers or a rear design elliptical.
  • An interactive audio coach – A computerized fitness coach is a pretty cool feature…sort of like having your own personal trainer to help you reach your fitness goals.
  • 7 workout programs – With more variety, you’re sure to stay motivated and challenged to achieve your fitness goals.
  • Dock and built-in speakers – Plug your MP3 player right into the dock and listen to your favorite music as you exercise.
  • Target pacer – This feature lets you know when you need to pick up the pace or slow down.
  • Cooling fan – Having a fan in the console is quite nice when you’re working up a good sweat.
  • Shipping – If you have the Crosstrainer 510 shipped to your local Walmart store for pickup, shipping is free. Otherwise, you have to pay the shipping costs to have the machine delivered to your address.

Our Review – The Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510

On the surface, it appears that you’re getting a lot of machine with the Gold’s Gym Crosstrainer 510. It has some features that would be quite attractive, if they were made of higher quality components. Icon Fitness has about about a half dozen elliptical trainer designs that they mix and match for their various brands. This particular model is not my favorite. However, for the price it is one of the better buys.

I have concerns about the stability and durability. Let's face it, when you spend around $500 for what should be a precision piece of equipment, you can't expect too much. However, it should be noted that there are a number of very positive reviews on Wal-Mart's site regarding this model.

For a couple hundred or so dollars more, you might want to check out some Pro-Form or NordicTrack elliptical trainers. These Icon models tend to be sturdier and more durable than this particular Gold’s Gym model.
