In the past I was never a big fan of Horizon elliptical trainers. I found them to be unstable, not very durable and they had an uncomfortable elliptical motion. Something changed, it could have been new management or sudden enlightenment, but their new generation of elliptical trainers seem to be from a different planet in comparison.
I was recently at the North American corporate headquarters of Johnson Fitness, which builds Horizon. The facilities were impressive, as was the staff. There was a huge workout center for the staff to actually exercise on the machines they design and promote. The majority of the staff was fit and had a really positive attitude about the jobs.

So what about Horizon elliptical trainers. The Johnson folks took a new approach to designing their next generation of crosstrainers (Excudes the Horizon EX-57). They interviewed customers and prospective customer to find out what their priorities were in selecting an elliptical. Out of these encounters they developed the SIXSTAR Certification. A series of biomechanical features designed to give the Horizon ellipticals a natural and comfortable feel.
Note: Much of what you read here will be very similar to my reviews on LiveStrong elliptical trainers. They are built by the same company and are comparable in design and engineering.
SIXSTAR Certification
Ideal Pedal Placement — Pedals are placed with zero distance between them to eliminate stress on hips and back. Particularly woman complain about the distance between the pedal because of their unique and adoring physique.
Optimal Handlebar Spacing — Grips are within optimal reach and distance for both small and large framed users.
Straight-up Body Posture — Keeps your body upright for improved comfort. I noticed when I work out on my front drive elliptical I am always leaning forward to use the handlebars. That is why I often forego the bars altogether and simulate running.
Long, Natural Elliptical Stride — Mimics a natural running or walking motion while minimizing fatigue.
Low Pedal Placement — Pedals placed low to the ground are easier to step on and off. Particularly with rear drive ellipticals some find it cumbersome to have to step over the center drive mechanism.
Smoother Momentum — The large drive pulley ratio creates a smoother and more efficient motion.
The SIXSTAR Certification Ellipticals
Horizon EX-59 — Their entry model, that typically sells for $599. For the price reasonably solid and sturdy. It comes with an 18" stride that is adequate for average height individuals. You get the design elements mentioned above. In addition...
- Speakers and MP3 Input
- Large Pedals
- LED Display with 3 Windows
- 7 Installed Workout Programs
- Console Fan
- 18" Elliptical Motion
A decent value for a mid-range budget crosstrainer. Just remember, this is primarily designed for moderate use and moderate weight individuals.
Horizon EX-69 — Typically sells for $799. You get all the features listed about. The major differences are a 20" elliptical stride and a manual adjustable incline. There is also a slightly heavier flywheel. Many will find the extra 2" stride more comfortable and natural. The adjustable incline allows you to increase the intensity of your workout and target different lower body muscles. The heavier flywheel will add further to a smooth elliptical stride.
Horizon EX-79 — Typically sells for $999. This is their top of the line, but it still falls in the budget range at this price. You get all of the above. The additional features are a power incline, that I believe can be changed as you are working out. Volume controls for your iPod located on the console. PowerArch footpads that are similar to Skechers shoes. The footpads did feel more comfortable than the standard pedals.
What also makes this model a standout is the ability to store your workout data (time, distance, calories burned, etc.) and download it to your personalized account on Nikeplus.com. You are able to track your progress over time. It is proven that individuals that monitor their progress are more likely to achieve their fitness goals. At NikePlus.com you will also find training recommendations and other helpful fitness resources.
Non SIXSTAR Elliptical
Horizon EX-57 — Typically sells for $499. What makes this elliptical stand out is the price. However, when you get into this price range there are some compromises. The elliptical stride is not as comfortable or natural as the models above. It is also not as stable.
Our Review - Horizon Elliptical Trainers
The new generation of SIXSTAR Certification Horizon elliptical trainers are a vast improvement over their previous generation of crosstrainers. The new machines appear more stable, durable and provide a more natural elliptical strainer. As if you were running on air.
Of course, they are budget machines and have certain limitations. They are not really designed for strenuous use and exceptional heavy individuals. In fact, I feel their user weight limits are over stated, like most fitness equipment manufacturers. Regardless, for the money they are some of the better values out there.
