Horizon Fitness EX-79 Elliptical Trainer Review

2012 Elliptical Trainer Reviews     |     "Best Buy" Elliptical Trainers

The Horizon Fitness EX-79 elliptical trainer reviewThe Horizon EX-79 elliptical trainer is their top of the line of the SIXSTAR certification series, although it only cost $999. The SIXSTAR certification is a series of design features meant to provide a natural and comfortable cross training experience. It was based on interviews with elliptical users and their preferences in buying a machine.

The SIXSTAR certified ellipticals offer the following...

Ideal Pedal Placement — Pedals are placed with zero distance between them to eliminate stress on hips and back. Also, the pedals are oversized allowing the ability to place your foot where it is most comfortable.

Note: Also check out our "Best Buy" recommendation at $999 — the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 PRO.

Optimal Handlebar Spacing — Grips are within optimal reach and distance for both small and large framed users.

Straight-up Body Posture — Keeps your body upright for improved comfort.I noticed when I work out on my front drive elliptical I am always leaning forward to use the handlebars. That is why I often forego the bars altogether and simulate running.

Long, Natural Elliptical Stride — Mimics a natural running or walking motion while minimizing fatigue.

Low Pedal Placement — Pedals placed low to the ground are easier to step on and off.Particularly with rear drive ellipticals some find it cumbersome to have to step over the center drive mechanism.

Smoother Momentum — The large drive pulley ratio creates a smoother and more efficient motion.

Horizon Fitness EX-79 Elliptical Trainer Features...

The Horizon Fitness EX-79 consolePower Incline — You are able to raise or lower the elliptical stride, similar to the incline feature found on a treadmill. This feature is found on a number of elliptical trainers, and it offers the benefit of cranking up your cardio workout and targeting and toning different lower body muscles.

17.6 Lbs Flywheel — Not the heaviest flywheel you'll find on an elliptical, but for the price it is decent size. The weight adds to a smoother motion.

20" Stride Length — At 20" stride length combined with an elongated elliptical stride give you a motion that is similar to running or walking in the air.

Extra Cushion Pedals — The are called PowerArch footpads. They are similar to Skecker shoes and reduce some of the stress that comes to continually lifting your heal with each stride.

Speakers and iPod Input — The sound definitely will not satisfy steriophiles, but it is convenient having the speakers located directly in front of you. There are also volume controls built into the console so you don't have to make the adjustments on your tiny iPod screen.

Built-in Fan — Like speakers it is preferable to have a fan pointed directly at your core.

Warranty — You get lifetime on the frame and brakes, 2-years on the parts and 1-year in home labor. The majority of ellipticals at this price typically have 1-year parts coverage.

Online Tracking — This is one of the more unique features on the Horizon EX-79. You are able to save the data from your workout on your iPod and download it to your personal account on NikePlus.com. There you can track your progress over time. In addition, you can get training recommendations and other useful health and exercise information. It has been shown that people who track their progress tend to strive for new benchmarks and better achieve their fitness goals.

Our Review - Horizon Fitness EX-79 Elliptical Trainer

When I was at the Johnson Fitness North American Headquarters, the parent company of Horizon, I was given a thorough tour, met many of the upper management and tested a number of their 2011 models. Overall I was very impressed. Considering the price, I feel these new crosstrainers are reasonably durable machines that have features that focus on the customer's fitness needs.

The Horizon EX-79 offers a comfortable and natural elliptical workout. It also combines additional features like a sound system, incline adjustment and online tracking, which overall make this an attractive package.

It should be noted that LiveStrong elliptical trainers are also built by Johnson Fitness. The designs are very similar to the Horizon ellipticals. They have an additional model, the LiveStrong LS13.0E, which is more heavy duty.
