NordicTrack
CX 985 Elliptical Trainer Review
What
makes the CX 985 unique is the Quick Ramp
incline feature. From the console you can adjust the incline settings from 10%-30%.
By alternating the degree of the incline you are able to exercise and tone more
leg muscles.
This
technology is licensed through Precor, and with the exception of the CX 985 and
a similar ProForm model, it is only available on Precor models costing $3,000
and more.
All
other elliptical trainers vary your workout through resistance levels. The NordicTrack
CX 995 lets you adjust both the incline and the resistance.
In
addition to the incline adjustment, this is what you get for around $700:
- Two
heart-rate programs automatically adjust the incline and resistance based on your
heart rate. The heart is monitored through hand grips, but an optional chest strap
is available.
- Built-in
fan, although don't expect it to blow you away.
- The
console is rather basic, with only two small readouts and a training zone graph.
- Compatible
iFit technology. For an extra charge you can order additional workout programs
via the Internet, compact discs or video that actually control the speed and intensity
of your fitness equipment. These programs are designed by professional fitness
trainers.
- The
CX 995 has 10 Quick Resistance buttons on the console to change the intensity
throughout your workout. We found in some instances the change from one level
to the other could be significant.

Source Review
We
awarded the CX 985 the "Best Buy" last year primarily for the Quick
Ramp technology. It is an excellent idea for getting an extensive workout. However,
with any elliptical trainer selling under $1,000 you will have some compromise
on the components.
This
is not the most durable machine, but then again you are only paying around $700.
It does come with a one year parts and service warranty, which is reasonable at
this price range. You may want to consider an extended warranty option. It should
also be mentioned that NordicTrack does not have the best customer service reputation,
but once again this is an inexpensive machine.
If
you have less than $1,000 to spend on a elliptical, and you plan to use it moderately
(3-5 hours a week), than this machine is worth considering. If you have the extra
money consider a Sole, Smooth
2.1, or
New Balance elliptical.

Reports Review of the NordicTrack CX 990 (2005 version of the CX 985)
In
their ratings of 10 elliptical trainers, CR rated the NordicTrack CX 990 seven
out of ten. But it should be noted that the ratings of the ellipticals corresponded
with the price. The higher price Precor and Life Fitness rated first and second,
while the lower price machines rated at the bottom.
In
their review of the CX 990 they gave it a "Very Good" for ease of use,
"Good" for ergonomics and quality, and a "Excellent" for exercise
range.

Great home gym elliptical machine... for
13 months. One month after the warranty expired the resistance motor failed to
function resulting in no resistance adjustment. - Ken
