NordicTrack Pathfinder Elliptical Trainer Review

NordicTrack Pathfinder Elliptical Trainer ReviewThe NordicTrack Pathfinder is the 2010 version of the popular NordicTrack AudioStrider 990.  Although there are some upgraded features that are worth noting, the basic design has been the same for the last several years.  This design has been extremely successful, and in fact, a similar model received a "Best Buy" rating from a distinguished consumer magazine.

There are several reasons for the success:

  • The ability to incline the elliptical motion.
  • The ability to fold the elliptical and easily move it.
  • It has a good service record for a budget elliptical trainer.
  • It usually sells at a value price.

Note: As of 3/8/10 the NordicTrack Pathfinder was selling for $899 with shipping. They dropped the price by $100. A good value. Go to www.NordicTrackEllipticals.com for the latest price.*

In addition to the above factors, the various versions of this model come with some impressive features for a cross trainer normally selling for under $1,000.

NordicTrack Pathfinder Elliptical Trainer Features...

iFit Live — This is a new technology for 2010, where your elliptical trainer can communicate with the Internet.  For an extra cost you purchase a module you insert into the machine.  You'll then create your personal profile on iFit.com, including your fitness goals like losing a certain amount of weight over a certain period.   iFit Live will track your progress and also download workout routines into your elliptical trainer.  I've yet to try this new application, so I am going to let NordicTrack explain the features...

"Experience trails all over the world as if you were outside with Google Maps™! Now you can work out with Jillian Michaels, customize your own fitness program, receive automatic workout downloads and manage your profile online. Add competition to your workout with 5k races against your Facebook® friends. Other features include a nutrition and activity tracker, motivating text messages and emails, and workout videos available for download."

It sounds exciting, but I am still trying to figure out how for example, how you can simulate walking on trails with Google Maps on an elliptical.  As I learn more I will keep you informed.  I do know the people I'm in touch with at NordicTrack feel that iFit Live compatible machines are going to be huge sellers.  The cost is $49 for the module insert and $9.95 per month membership.

Incline Ramp — You have the ability to adjust the incline of the elliptical motion.  This allows you to target different leg muscles at different levels. They also mention that the NordicTrack Pathfinder has a variable stride.  I believe as you heighten the ramp it slightly increases the stride from 18"-20".  The incline adjustment is power, rather than manual, which you had on some of their older models.

The incline ramp has been one of the main reasons for the popularity of this machine design.

NordicTrack Pathfinder ConsoleSpeakers with iPod/MP2 Input — This is a standard feature on NordicTrack elliptical trainers.  The sound isn't great, but the apex is pointed right at you.  It allows you to exercise without headphones.

SpaceSaver Design — The Pathfinder folds, which has two benefits.  First, it takes up less space.  Second, when folded it is very easy to move.  This is one of the easiest elliptical trainers to move about.

Oversized Pedals — The pedals are extra large, which gives you the advantage of placing your foot in a position that is most comfortable while exercising.  They also are made to cushion and absorb impact.

Our Review — NordicTrack Patfinder

When you have a money making design why mess with it.  NordicTrack has been marketing this design for a number of years under a variety of model names.  The Pathfinder with iFit Live is the latest version.

As mentioned the service record is relatively good considering the price.  However, you should realize this is a budget elliptical trainer with certain limitations.  It is not any near commercial grade.  I would not recommend this for heavy-duty extensive use.  Like multiple users, using it for several hours per day.  I also feel the 350 lbs. user limit is way off the mark.  I would conservatively place the user limit at around 240 lbs.

In conclusion, when selling for $900 or less with shipping, the NordicTrack Pathfinder elliptical is one of the better budget crosstrainers on the market.
