ProForm 990 CSE Elliptical Review

2012 Elliptical Trainer Reviews     |     "Best Buy" Elliptical Trainers

ProForm 990 CSE elliptical trainer reviewThe ProForm 990 CSE elliptical trainer is new for 2010.  The basic design has been around for several years and has proven to be very reliable for the price.  However, what makes the 990 CSE appealing is all the additional features, which help to relieve the boredom of exercising in place, while motivating you to achieve your fitness goals.

Note: Last I looked the ProForm 990 CSE was selling for $999 with shipping. It is overpriced by a couple of hundred dollars. I would recommend at $999 the ProForm 18.0 RE or the almost exact clone, the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 PRO.

ProForm 990 CSE Elliptical Trainer Features...

iFit Live Compatible — Since coming out in 2010, iFit Live has been a big hit with customers.  The reality with fitness equipment is that most people buy the machines with good intentions, but quickly become bored.  iFit Live addresses that problem by offering a variety of motivational challenges.

This is how it works. iFit Live allows the ProForm 990 CSE  to communicate with the Internet (Wi-Fi  is required). To start you create a personalized account on iFit.com and define your fitness goals. Based on your input iFit Live will download workout programs designed to help you achieve your goals. These programs were created by professional fitness trainers. In fact, several  are designed by Jillian Michaels of "Biggest Loser" fame. The workout routines are progressive in order to get your to constantly improve and reach new heights.

The program controls the resistance of your elliptical trainer and provides audio coaching for further motivation. In addition, the ProForm 990 CSE  communicates with the Internet and downloads your stats from your workout so you have a ongoing record of your progress.  With your iFit.com account you also have access to a library fitness and nutritional resources.

In addition to customized workout programs, the  ProForm 990 CSE can communicate with Google Maps. You can actually trace routes on Google Maps and your elliptical will increase or decrease resistance in relationship to the terrain. You can watch your progress on Google Maps with the use of your laptop or Smart Phone. There are slots on the console to place your laptop or smart phone.  There is also a library of preexisting routes  where Jillian Michaels will coach you through famous cityscapes, lakeside runs and renowned mountain trails.

Note:  There is an additional cost for iFit Live. As of the writing of this review it was $129 for a year.

Power Incline -  The power incline feature  is available on several ProForm elliptical trainers.  The attraction is that you can crank up your cardio workout and get more results in less time.  When you push the incline up to 30 degrees you are going to sucking air real quick.  In addition, at different levels you can target different lower body muscles like glutes, quads or calves.

Space Saver Design — The ProForm CSE folds.  It saves approximately 14" of space, it also makes it easier to move around when folded.

18" 20" Adjustable Elliptical Stride — You can adjust the stride to your preference.

ProForm 990 CSE ConsoleCooling Fan — The location of the fan in the console actually provides some relief and optimally points at your core.

Speakers and MP3 Input — The speaker system is sufficient and is better than what you will find on most other  elliptical brands.

20 Built-In Workout Programs — ProForm usually offers a generous selection of installed programs. The ProForm 990 CSE has 10 performance workouts and 10 "target toning" workouts.  If you don't want to spend the money for iFit Live, you still have a wide variety of challenges to keep you motivated.

Our Review - ProForm 990 CSE  Elliptical Trainer

The basic design of the ProForm 990 CSE elliptical is found on a couple of other ProForm models, in addition to several NordicTrack crosstrainers.  This design has been very success for both brands and  considering the price, it has a respectable service record.   However, this is what I would consider a high-end budget elliptical.  It is not like the commercial grade machines you may have used in a health club.    It is best suited for moderate use and for individuals of moderate height and weight.

ProForm offers some of the best value for crosstrainers in the $600 - $1000 price range.    The ProForm 990 CSE is a perfect example.  With  iFit Live, a speaker system, a fan, 20 installed programs, adjustable stride and power incline, you have an impressive package for a reasonable amount of money.
