ProForm CX 1050 Elliptical Trainer Review

proform cx 1050 elliptical trainer reviewAlthough the ProForm CX 1050 elliptical trainer is competitively priced at $799, I would consider a couple of other models in their line-up — The ProForm CX 1055 with adjustable incline and the ProForm 20.0.

The feature that makes the CX 1050 elliptical standout is the iFit technology. What they don't say in the description is that it uses the older plug-in technology, not the cards that you insert into the machine. I would suggest, that this elliptical will soon be discontinued, since this older technology is being phased out.

Note: As of 7/22/08 the ProForm CX 1050 was on sale for $699 with shipping at their clearance web site. Go to WorkoutWarehouse.com for the latest price.

For those not familiar with iFit, it is a series of workout programs designed by personal trainers. The various programs focus on different fitness goals - weight loss, body shaping, endurance, etc. The programs control the resistance of the elliptical trainer and include audio of the personal trainer. What I like about iFit is the workout programs go through a progression, beginning at a starter level and gradually increasing the level of exercise.

The older plug-in method requires getting the program online and plugging them into your elliptical. Cumbersome and impractical.

Reasons to Consider the ProForm CX 1055 and the ProForm 20.0

ProForm CX 1055 comes with an adjustable incline features. This is similar to the design found in Precor Ellipticals that cost $3,000 plus. In fact, the technology is leased from Precor. Being able to adjust the include allows you to workout different muscle groups. It also really kicks up your cardio exercise.

The ProForm 20.0 is decent machine for $799. We rated it a "Best Buy." in the $500-$1,000 price range. It comes with this gimmicky video game that lets you destroy calories while you workout. For me this is not a big selling feature. What I like is the generous selection of workout programs, the music port and speakers (MP3 and IPod compatible), and the comfortable 18" stride. I also like how the pedals roll over a flat rail, giving it more stability.

Fitness Equipment Source Review - ProForm CX 1050

I would pass on this machine. I suspect it will not be around much longer. For the same price the ProForm 20.0 is a better design. Or, for a couple hundred more you can get the CX 1055 with the patented adjustable incline feature.
