ProForm FX 5 Elliptical Trainer ReviewProForm has a reputation for making a decent low-end elliptical trainer. A couple of discontinued models-the ProForm 160 CrossTrainer and the ProForm StrideClimber 650 elliptical trainer-were some of ProForm's best-selling machines in this category. Priced at under $1,000, the ProForm FX 5 is comparable to those two defunct models. In fact, it is probably one of the better budget elliptical trainers on the market.

With any budget elliptical trainer, however, you're going to have a few downfalls. The ProForm FX 5 is no exception. Nevertheless, as was true with the 160 CrossTrainer and the StrideClimber 650, the FX 5 comes with some attractive features. Just make sure that this is the right machine for you before you buy!

Features Found on the ProForm FX 5 Elliptical Trainer

ProForm FX 5 Elliptical ConsoleWorkout programs: With five weight-loss workouts and five personal trainer workouts, the FX 5 offers an ample variety of workout programs from which to choose. Given such a wide choice, you'll be able to challenge yourself to quickly meet those fitness goals without growing bored of the same old routine.

Maximum user weight limit: The weight limit shown is 275 lbs. I suggest that the maximum weight limit should not exceed 225 lbs. for optimum performance and wear.

EKG Heart Rate Monitor and Target Pacer: These features are an asset for helping you reach and maintain your target heart rate, thus keeping you on track to meet your fitness goals. The sensors are built into the handlebars.

ProForm FX 5 pedalsCooling fan: A cool breeze blowing towards you from the fan helps keep you comfortable during your workouts.

Ten resistance levels: The resistance system allows you to adjust the resistance level without interrupting your workout. With ten levels from which to choose, you can increase or decrease the resistance as needed.

Stride: By elliptical standards the 16 inch stride is short and recommended for user who are of below average height, like 5'5" or shorter. Taller people would be better off using an elliptical with a longer stride.

Backlit display: Easy to read display helps you monitor your progress.

Our Review - ProForm FX 5 Elliptical Trainer Review

Elliptical trainers are becoming popular among people who want to optimize their workouts and get both an upper and lower body workout simultaneously. A really good elliptical machine can be rather costly, however.

For someone on a tight budget, the FX 5 elliptical trainer is one of the more affordable machines. Although it likely has one of the best elliptical motions found on an elliptical trainer in its price range, you need to be aware that this model does have limitations.

For instance, its lightweight frame and a single concave wheel rolling over the length of a bar tend to make this elliptical trainer not as stable as higher price units. Furthermore, the size and weight of the ProForm FX 5 makes it impractical for a heavy user. Also, its small stride makes it less practical for someone over 5'5."

Recommendation: The selling price as of 12/04/08 was $599.00. That can be a great buy for a smaller individual who has limited funds. If you're too tall or too heavy, I recommend you save up a little more money and invest in a heavier, sturdier elliptical machine. You'll be much happier in the long run, if you make the right decision.
