Smooth Agile DMT X1 Review
Smooth Fitness released their Agile DMT about a year ago, and it has been a big seller for them. It offers an alternative to the standard elliptical motion machine. Although an elliptical trainer works both your upper and lower body, they tone limited parts of the lower body. The Dynamic Motion Trainer has twelve distinct motions designed to shape and tone more of your body.
The problem with the Smooth Agile DMT was the price was too high for many. Smooth responded with a scaled down version – the Smooth Agile DMT X1. It offers many of the same exercise benefits as the Smooth Agile, but cost approximately $1,000 less.
Note: As of 3/8/10 the Smooth Agile DMT X1 was no longer available. See the comparable Smooth Agile DMT X2.
Dynamic Motion Trainer (DMT)
What makes both version of the Agile DMT extraordinary is the unique dynamic motion. Elliptical trainers have a singular limited elliptical motion. Consequently, your lower muscles get a limited workout.
The Agile expands beyond the limited path of an elliptical trainer by "guiding your body through twelve distinct motions. In so doing, muscles from every region of the body are recruited to form a stronger, leaner and more agile you."
The hype behind an elliptical trainer, and the reason they are surpassing treadmills in popularity, is the fact they offer a low impact workout, which exercises both your upper and lower body.
However, many people are not adequately exerting themselves when they workout on an elliptical. They tend to go through the motions with little exertion. This is particularly true with the upper body workout. Most people are applying very little pressure to the handlebars, and consequently are not equally distributing the exercise between the upper and lower body.
In comparison, this is what you can expect from exercising on the Smooth Agile DMT X1…
- In forward motion - You are getting the same benefits that you would from doing squats, lunges and abdominal crunches. Your quadriceps, glutes and core muscles are getting a solid toning workout.
- In reverse motion - You are exercising your calves and hamstrings.
- In both directions - You are also toning your arms and shoulders because the Agile doesn't just take them along for the ride as elliptical trainers do, it adds resistance to your arms, shoulders, chest and back.
Less Strain and Stress on Your Joints
I have an elliptical trainer, and it offers considerably less strain to my joints in comparison to a treadmill. However, there is one problem. The repetitive motion is straining certain joints. That is why it is important to change up your workout, no matter what type of exercise you do.
With the 12 distinct motions of the Agile X1 you break out of the mold. Your are constantly changing your motion and the strain to your joints – which is a good thing. According to Smooth Fitness, it offers less impact than just about any exercise, short of swimming.

Our Review – Smooth Agile DMT X1
The Smooth Agile DMT X1 represents the next generation of elliptical trainers. It goes beyond the stationary elliptical motion design, and in the process offers a more complete and challenging workout. There are three benefits to the Agile DMT X1…
- Exercise and tone more muscles
- Less stress and strain from repetitive motion
- More intense cardio workout
I've yet to try out this model, although I have checked out the upgraded version. The exercise is challenging and invigorating. It has a solid and stable feel and runs relatively quieter. I expect the X1 version is comparable in quality, stability and durability. Overall, Smooth Fitness has a good reputation for quality control.
I currently have a standard motion elliptical. When I am in the market for a new model, I'll be considering either an elliptical with adjustable incline, variable stride or the Dynamic Motion found on both models of the Agile DMT.
