CE 2.0 Elliptical Trainer Review
I just got off the phone with Keith Menear, the VP of Internet Marketing for Smooth Fitness, and we talked about the new Smooth CE 2.0 elliptical trainer. This is their new entry model.
There are some serious contenders, like the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 and the Sole E25, however there is always room for another model. Especially if it can be durable and reliable at this price.
Smooth has always had a reputation for building quality equipment at a value price. They've been selling a $999 treadmill for years, and it has always been a contender for a "Best Buy." Given time and a track-record, the Smooth CE 2.0 may also follow suite. It has a good start. Keith said they've sold about 80 models and service issues have been minimal.
Note: As of 11/11/08 the Smooth CE 2.0 was selling for $799, with Shipping. This is a $200 decrease from the previous price. Go to

Review of the Smooth CE 2.0 Features.
16" Elliptical Stride - This is a smaller stride than you will find on more expensive elliptical trainers. I would not recommend this machine for someone over 5'9". However, there are taller individuals that prefer a smaller stride. Overall the stride is smooth and reasonably quiet.
Electromagnetic Braking System - The CE 2.0 resistance system has no motor and few parts. Fewer parts mean fewer service problems.
Compact Design - If you have space issues, you will appreciate the 45" L x 20" W footprint. That compares to a 71" length on the Sole E25.
150 Lbs. Unit Weight - The problem with many elliptical that have a small footprint is stability. At 150 lbs. the CE 2.0 has a fairly solid feel.
Adjustable Pedals and Moving Handlebars - By adjusting the pedals and the handlebars you can find the positioning that is ideal for your comfort range.
Heart Rate Control - The Smooth CE 2.0 trainer has heart rate control, where the machine varies the resistance according to your pulse. This is the perfect way to optimize your exercise based on your heart rate. The only problem is it requires holding the stationary sensor grips. You can't use it with the moveable handlebars. There are models with wireless heart rate control, but they usually cost at least a few hundred more.
Multi-Color Display - Although the console and display are very basic, I like the clean, simple look. The two-tone backlight displays time, speed, distance, calories, pulse, resistance level (load) and RPM.
Warranty - Comes with a lifetime brake system, 2-year parts and 1-year labor warranty. This is average coverage. It is better than most NordicTrack ellipticals, but less than you will find on Sole's trainers.
Recovery Pulse Measuring - This is a rather unique feature. It monitors your fitness progress by measuring your rate of recovery from a workout. According to the Smooth.
"Upon completion of your elliptical training session, press the recovery key and continue to monitor your heart rate for 60 seconds. The elliptical computer will calculate the speed at which your pulse returns to a resting heart rate after a workout. Based on this data, your fitness level will be scored from 1 to 6 (1 is highest)."
Our Review - Smooth CE 2.0 Elliptical
The Smooth CE 20 is a serious contender for a budget elliptical. I would consider it a better choice over brands like ProForm, Horizon and NordicTrack. Where other brands focus on bells and whistles to hide a lack of quality. The CE 20 is probably one of the highest quality ellipticals you will find under $1,000.
However, remember this is a budget elliptical and it has some limitations. Extremely overweight individuals should consider a heavier model. Very tall users will prefer an elliptical with a 20" stride. If you are an excercise fanatic you should also considering upgrading.
