Smooth Fitness CE 2.7 Elliptical Trainer Review
I have yet to try the Smooth CE 2.7, although I am planning a trip to the corporate headquarters in the next few weeks. However, the basic design and the features can be found on their two Agile DMT machines, the Agile DMT and Agile DMT X-1, which I have tried.
The DMT stands for Dynamic Motion Technology, what it offers is a new twist on the basic elliptical stride found on most trainers. Rather than an elliptical stride, you get a variety of motions that works different parts of your body. The problem with elliptical trainers is you have one motion that focuses on limited muscles. Your muscles adapt to that single motion and it limits your progress.
Note: As of 11/26 the Smooth CE 2.7 was no longer available, see the Smooth CE 3.7.
The full-blown Agile DMT and the Agile DMT X1 offers 12 different motions, while the Smooth CE 2.7 has only three motions. Still, these three different motions give you the ability to focus on different parts of your lower body, giving you a more complete and challenging workout. Sounds good!
I know from working out on my elliptical that my body has adapted to the fixed motion. Consequently this fixed motion isn't doing much for toning my lower body. With the Smooth CE 2.7 you have three distinct patterns of motion to choose from, instead of just a standard elliptical motion. These different motions change-up your workout, thus preventing muscle adaption. It also can breaks-up the monotony of exercising in place.
Other Features on the Smooth CE 2.7…
Articulating Foot Pedals - The pedals are designed to angle with the motion, thus reducing stain on your ankles and knees. The extra cushioning further reduces stress to your arches and pounding to your heel.
Heart Rate Monitors in Moveable Handlebars - I wish more elliptical manufacturers would include this feature. You can get your heart rate feedback without having to hold on to stationary handles. The monitors are build into the moveable handgrips. The Smooth CE 2.7 is also equipped for wireless heart rate control. The strap is an option.
204 lb. Unit Weight - Both the weight of the CE 2.7 and the wide base make this a very stable machine. Within its' price range the CE 2.7 is better capable of handling heavier individuals than other comparably priced models.
Nine Preset Programs - The Smooth CE 2.7 comes with the standard programs you find on most machines. It also allows you to program and store up to nine different user profiles. A nice feature if you have multiple users in your family.
Our Review - Smooth CE 2.7
The Dynamic Motion Trainers are a big hit for Smooth. Both the Agile DMT and the Agile DMT X1 have become hot sellers for the company. The reason why? People want to optimize their workout and the get the best results in the least amount of time. The Smooth CE 2.7 offers some of the benefits of these other models, however with limitations.
First, the CE 2.7 has only three distinct motions in comparison to the twelve found on the other models. Second, you have to manually change the motion on the CE 2.7. Which means you can't change-up the motion without pausing your workout. I don't know about you, but when I am in the groove, I don't want to stop.
So am I suggesting you take a pass on this model? No, if your budget is around $1,300 then the Smooth CE 2.7 should be a consideration. Based on the design and the typical quality that comes out of Smooth Fitness, you can assume this is a solid and durable cross training machine. And having three workout motions is an improvement over only having one.
However, if you can afford it, go for the Smooth Agile DMT X1. You get a heavier duty machine with 12 dynamic motions. Furthermore, you can change the motion and adjust the intensity with thumb controls in on the handlebars.
