The
Spirit ZE110 elliptical trainer stands out of the pack of sub $1,000 models. In
general, I have reservations about recommending any elliptical in this price range.
Usually the machines are poorly constructed and come with limited warranties.
Recently I tested the ZE110 elliptical at an Academy sporting goods store
in Dallas. It was on the floor with various ProForm and Horizon models, all under
$1,000. Usually these budget ellipticals have short strides, are unstable, and
the floor models have already developed noise problems.
With the majority
of the Horizon ellipticals, the handlebars were loose. Of course, you have to
realize the abuse these floor models at a mass merchant sporting goods store.
As
I was trying out the line-up of ellipticals, I came up to the Spirit ZE110. At
first, I thought there was a problem with the machine, since the motion was less
than smooth, and it was rather noisy. Then I realized that one of the pedals was
off the track. Once I replaced it correctly, I had an entirely different impression.
For an elliptical selling under $1,000, it had a relatively smooth elliptical
motion.
What contributes to that smooth motion is the 24 lb. flywheel.
You won't find an elliptical in this price range that has a flywheel that
is comparable in weight. In general, the heavier the flywheel the smoother the
motion.
The Spirit ZE110 comes with heart rate control, which is surprising
at this price range, but the wireless belt is extra. You get a nice range of 16
resistance levels, and a total of 13 pre-programmed workouts, one user defined
and one heart rate program.
It comes with a comfortable 18" stride,
which is adequate for moderate height individuals. If you are tall, I recommend
an elliptical with a 20" stride.
A couple of criticism. The console
and display are cheap, but so is the price. You get a single window LCD readout.
Also the ZE110 has a single wheel that runs along the railing. As I mentioned,
when I first got on the machine I had to put it back in place. But the wheel has
a concave design which contributes to a more stable feel.
The warranty
comes with a respectable three-year parts coverage, but the brake system,
which is most likely to break, only has one year of coverage. You also get 1-year
service.
Regarding Spirit Fitness customer service, I worked for a
company that private labeled their products, and overall their customer service
was good.
The one problem with Spirit elliptical trainers is their limited
distribution. I found this model at an Academy store located in Dallas. I do not
believe that chain exists in the east. I searched for a dealer on their site in
Illinois, and came up blank. There were only three in PA. As mentioned, you can
order through Amazon.com.
Our Review - Spirit ZE110 Elliptical
In
this price range, the Spirit ZE110 elliptical trainer stands out. There is only
two other elliptical to consider below $1,000, and that is the NordicTrack
SpaceSaver and the Schwinn 430.
Be
aware, that any elliptical at this price range is going to compromise on the quality
of the parts. You are more likely to have service issues than with an elliptical
in the +$1,300 price range. However, if your budget is limited - the ZE110 may
be your best bet.
Customer Reviews
There was one review on Amazon,
the customer stated, "For the price, it feels sturdy and confortable."
He mentioned it had a squeak and he could live with it. I wouldn't, he should
get it fixed under the warranty. He further stated, "The quality of the
excercise seems really good and seems to protect my joints, as well keeps me on
my target zone for heart rate confortably and longer, much better than running
outdoors."
