Staying
Fit In Cold Weather
It's
that time of year again, when the temperatures begin to plummet down to those
freezing cold digits. For those of us who are fair weather folks, the cold months
tend to lull us into hibernation. We simply want to crawl beneath a blanket and
not come out until next spring. Too often, we become "couch potatoes."
We sit in front of the TV, stuffing ourselves with snacks and soft drinks
barely
mustering enough energy to pick up the remote control to switch channels. As a
result of our now sedentary lifestyles, we watch as our hips, thighs, and waistlines
begin to balloon out of control.
But
wait! It doesn't have to be that way! Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean
that we can't maintain control and keep our bodies lean and fit. After all, there
are many sorts of exercise routines that can be done indoors. It's only a matter
of finding at least one that is suitable for you and doing it.
Health
Club Option
For
some people, joining a gym is the answer. Most gyms offer several kinds of classes,
from aerobics to yoga to kick boxing, etc. If you're more of a loner, there are
the treadmills, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers, rowing machines, and
such to work out on. Or, perhaps, a few laps (walking or jogging) around an indoor
track is more your preference.
Home
Fitness Equipment Option
For
those who do not wish to join a gym or for whom a gym isn't feasible, working
out at home is another option. You can do rigorous calisthenics. Or, perhaps you
prefer to follow along with a workout video, doing low-impact aerobics (among
other types of exercise routines). And, if you're fortunate to have your very
own treadmill, elliptical trainer, stationary bicycle, home gym, or other exercise
machine, then, you might put that machine to good use several times a week, as
well. The important thing is that you remain active throughout the winter season.
Diehard
Outdoor Enthusiasts
Of
course, there are those of you who refuse to forgo outdoor activities, no matter
how cold and dreary the weather may be. According to David Dzewaltowski, associate
professor of kinesiology at Kansas State University, "at this time of year,
there is really no problem with exercising outside as long as you dress appropriately
and take a few precautions." He goes on to say that it is important to dress
in layers of breathable clothing, which provide insulation between the layers.
And never put on a raincoat, which doesn't breathe, over all those layers. "If
you do, when you sweat, the sweat cannot evaporate, and is held close to your
skin. Then, you get cold."
Yes
winter
is upon us! But you do not have to sacrifice your fitness, just because it's cold
outside. You can keep those extra inches off this year. All it takes is dedication
to a regular fitness routine and a little hard work. Always keep in mind that
you'll be more successful in maintaining a winter workout regimen if you find
an exercise program that you enjoy and that compliments your fitness level. Then,
stick with it!
Have
a healthy and prosperous life.
