Precor
EFX 5.23 Elliptical Trainer Review
Do
you know what I want for Christmas? A Precor EFX 5.23 elliptical trainer. Unfortunately
it is not in the budget for this year or probably next. But what a sweet machine.
Precor invented the concept of elliptical trainers. I review and test numerous
elliptical trainers, and this one was a pleasure to put through the motions.
The
Precor EFX 5.23 is one of the highest rated elliptical trainers out there, and
yet it only offers a lower body workout. I find that intriguing when you consider
that the popularity of elliptical trainers is partially due to the combine upper
and lower body exercise. If you are looking for that feature it is available on
several other Precor models.
Patented CrossRamp Technology
What
makes the Precor EFX 5.23 so exceptional is the patented CrossRamp technology.
Precor offers the only elliptical where you can adjust the ramp angle. In the
case of the EFX 5.23 you can adjust from 13 to 35 degrees. By adjusting the ramp
angle you target different muscle groups and work the glutes, quads, hamstrings
and calves. (The CrossRamp technology is not available on Precor ellipticals that
offer the upper body workout.)
Other features worth noting on the EFX 5.23
is the smooth elliptical motion. The combination of the CrossRamp and the rear
drive makes this one of the smoothest machines built. It is also one of the quietest.
No matter how hard I pushed this machine it was virtually silent.
The
EFX 5.23 offers excellent programming and workout variety. It comes with 14 programs
and 20 resistance levels, giving you the opportunity to always keep your routines
varied and challenging.
Precor has over 250 patents on their fitness equipment.
This company excels at design and innovation. But there is a catch, all this innovation
and exceptional design comes at a price. The suggested retail price is $4,200,
and don't expect any deep discounts.

Source Review - Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Trainer
If you want the
best quality available and you have an extra $4,200, then the Precor EFX 5.23
if the machine for you. Evidence of the quality of this machine is the warranty,
which is 10 years parts and 1 year labor (Note: Read the fine print on
the warranty, it has some limitations). Many companies suggest their residential
machines are commercial quality, but this is the real thing. That is why we rate
it a "Best Buy" it its price range.
If you want both the upper
and lower body workout you will have to sacrifice the CrossRamp technology. In
which case you may also want to look at Life Fitness
ellipticals. Their dual action machines compete with Precor.
It should
be noted that you can only purchase the Precor EFX 5.23 in fitness specialty stores.
You will find refurbished models sold online, but they usually come with a 90
day parts and labor warranty. We suggested you avoid them and buy a new model
with the full warranty.
